Close up magic is a popular choice for weddings right now – as well as keeping guests entertained and improving the overall atmosphere of the day, it can also bring groups of people together.
Having been hired for ceremonies across the UK and even abroad over the years, today I’m going to talk a bit about some of my favourite venues to perform at.
It just so happens that all of the ones listed below are based right here in Yorkshire:
Hazlewood Castle, West Yorkshire
Located near both Leeds and York, Hazlewood Castle can accommodate almost every type of wedding. I like how the grounds are very rural despite its convenient location and they make a great setting for the drinks reception and photographs in the summer, stroll around magic outside with the grand castle backdrop is a pleasure to perform. It doesn’t hurt that the landscape isn’t bad to look at either!
Oulton Hall, Leeds
The Leeds-based Oulton Hall is another that can host both small and large weddings. It’s also got a nice mix of traditional Yorkshire features and modern facilities. I’ve performed in the old hall itself which is full of character and also the more contemporary function sweet overlooking the golf course. The Spa’s a bit of a bonus too.
Waterton Park Hotel, Wakefield
A mansion surrounded by a twenty-six-acre lake that’s only accessible via a bridge, Waterton Park Hotel is as picturesque as it gets. Performing wedding magic here throughout the day or as part of the evening reception is always a joy. The short stroll over that bridge makes for a great intro to a magical day whilst the other function rooms back on “dry land” are also great for a good party/reception atmosphere.
Carlton Towers, North Yorkshire
In terms of history, luxury and style, Carlton Towers pretty much echoes what I’ve said about the others – it’s stunning. Similarly to Hazlewood Castle, it’s situated near Leeds, Harrogate and York too. Driving up to this place definitely has the wedding “wow” factor and the function room options are packed with characterful charm.
Devonshire Fell, Skipton
Right at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, Devonshire Fell is one of the memorable ones that really sticks out due to its views. You have to keep going past Bolton Abbey a few miles to get to this little gem but it’s a great find and very intimate.
