Live magic on the up

Blogs by Matthew J Magic

Like I talked about last week, magic and variety entertainment is pretty much my life, and has been for a long time now. It’s therefore really rewarding to see the genre, in general, being a bit more popular at the moment.

One thing I’ve noticed recently is that people are more willing to be entertained. There’ll probably always be a need for magicians to prove themselves (something which I welcome), but there’s definitely a visible shift in the direction of audiences actively wanting to give you the time of day.

From keeping a close eye on theatre too, it’s been great to see the success of a few West End shows over the Christmas period. I loved the Illusionists when I went to watch it, so it was pleasing to hear that they’d broken Shaftesbury’s box office records… Apparently taking over £3 million in a seven-week period.

Derren Brown’s ‘Miracle’ is another that signals the popularity of a new type of show, with live magic being at the forefront alongside the musicals and dramas. Having already seen him perform a few times I’d definitely like to experience his most recent one. The others were fantastic.

Same goes for Dynamo, who’s currently in the middle of a massive UK tour that spans over 80 shows. The fact that he sold over 250,000 tickets within a few weeks of announcing it is testament to the idea that people are buying into the whole entertainment art form. His ‘Mission Impossible’ TV programme also seemed to farewell.
